I started this week by conducting research on the music video I am going to do for my main task. The research consists of the following:
- The different types of music videos
- Music genres and their conventions (i.e. lighting, props and costume)
- Case Studies of each type of music video.

Today was all about researching into different music video genres and their conventions. I first started off by looking into costume and lighting in my music genre of choice; rock. I had to find out the reasoning behind the costumes in rock music videos from a historical perspective. I then had to come up with visual examples of these and presented to progression of appearance through the ages.

I continued my research on the rock genre by placing particular focus on colour schemes and props. I considered other genres of rock into my research to show contrast to the stereotypical rock scene. Research into props were quite straightforward as a lot of rock music videos feature simple band performance. However, colour schemes were more fleshed out and showed variety as different artists use colours either to boost their image or just disregard it completely. I found that there were similarities to how rock music videos are lit in correlation to their colour scheme. One major finding during my research was that different sub genres of rock contrast visually as well. Despite mise-en-scene being similar the colour really affects the mood of music videos as shown below:

I was still well under the process of research into music video genres but have now started to look into other genres that I felt I wanted to incorporated, stylistically, into my music video. I began by looking at rap/hip hop music videos as they have been another genre that has taken into the mainstream. After trawling through a number of rap/hip hop music videos I've seen one specific convention used time and time again; low angle camera shots. As shown in my research, a plethora of music videos in this genre incorporate this specific camera shot directly at the audience. I felt that I wanted to introduce this element into my music video as I liked it's connotation behind the shot.

EDM Music Videos was the subject of today's research segment. I found that they are typically energetic and love to portray the party/crowd atmosphere within the genre. This may stem from the fact that EDM (Electronic Dance Music) is consistently features in clubs and parties where the youth usually spend their time in for a sense of adventure. I quite liked this idea as it does well in attracting young audiences which has been the main make up of today's society who consume products from the entertainment industry.

Research was coming into a close and so I started to focus more on the pre-production aspect of my music video task. I focused on breaking my song of choice up into identifiable segments for ease of production. I listened to the track keeping the look of my music video in mind and how it will correlate to the song of choice. I've split the song up into time stamps to get the exact place and time of where my visuals will go into; particularly important when I get into editing. I already had this song in mind for quite some time so it was easy to jump straight into pre-production without contemplating on music choice.

I continued on breaking apart my song of choice and the task proved to be a little challenging picking out the different moods in the piece and visualising my take on the interpretation of the music through music video. I paid more attention to the individual moods of the song rather that immediately brain storming how my music video will complement the music. I also took briefly took into account different editing methods I could use in correlation to the music.

After finally finishing deconstructing the song, I started focusing on the mise-en-scene of my final piece and categorised by lighting, costume, location and props. Deconstructing the song was quite helpful as it made the rest of the process more concise in relation to the mood I wanted to reflect instead of taking a shot in the dark. Today was all about costume and how I wanted to represent the cast on set. This is an important consideration because I feel the the rock genre places great focus on representation similar to other genres.

Lighting was the focus of today - I looked at different types of lighting and physically tested out the lighting equipment we had in school. Since the song was quite moody I wanted the lighting to reflect a similar atmosphere. I also considered lighting on stage location since the school has lighting rigs installed for stage use. I did research on coloured filters, strobes and several lighting effects that I may take into consideration for my final product.
